There’s been a bit of controversy surrounding breast augmentation requests in the U.S. for 2008. Yet, despite the recession and some claims that breast implant sales in the U.S. are down, there have been reports that plastic surgeons are remaining busy throughout many areas in the country. In addition, Allergan and Mentor reported that worldwide breast implant sales were up by 11% to over 12% from last quarter. Combined revenues for both companies totaled close to 200 million dollars. In the past five years, close to 2 million women underwent the breast augmentation procedure and the number has remained in the 300,000 plus range.

The plastic surgery community has been known to explore and introduce forward thinking approaches to plastic surgery that can serve as an adjunct to plastic surgery treatment or an alternative option for those that do not otherwise qualify for a specific plastic surgery procedure such as breast augmentation. Breast augmentation has been traditionally performed through the use of silicone or saline implants or in select cases, tissue expandors. Breast augmentation through fat grafting is one breast augmentation alternative that is currently under formal review. Yet, the latest media announcement about breast augmentation is that Botox can be an alternative to breast augmentation. However, the idea about Botox being an alternative to breast augmentation has not undergone a formal investigation.

Breast augmentation has
increased by 476% since 1992, the largest increase in plastic surgery
procedures. Breast augmentation is a cosmetic
surgery procedure that increases the size of a womans breasts.
A saline filled implant with a silicone shell is placed under the
breast, which increases the breast size. In the past, silicone gel-filled implants
were used for breast augmentation, but the FDA restricted the use
of this type of implant in 1992 to perform further safety
studies.
The acceptance people have towards plastic surgery
and breast augmentation has shifted over the years as more and more
people describe desiring plastic surgery procedures in order to
feel young inside and outside. Even as the economy was suffering,
plastic surgery procedures remained popular. The 72 million baby
boomers are seeking plastic surgery at the rate of 1 million procedures
per year, and this trend does not appear to be slowing down anytime
soon.
